Frequently Asked Questions

1. Mattresses & Bedding

“I am having my second child, but do I need to buy a new cot mattress?”

Yes. Many national advisory bodies including our official affiliate The National Childbirth Trust (NCT) recommend that you buy a new mattress for each baby, avoiding the use of second hand/used mattresses.

“Does my baby mattress need to be breathable?”

Yes. Your cot mattress should help your baby to maintain a consistent, controlled body temperature by allowing air to circulate freely.

“How long should my cot mattress last for?”

A good firm cot mattress should last up to 5 years.

“How thick should my baby mattress be?”

The legal maximum depth of any baby cot mattress is 10cm. Most cot mattresses are around 8-10cm in depth, but providing the right support for your baby is the most important factor.

“How should I care for my mattress?”

We recommend that it is good practice to turn your mattress every 3 months. A waterproof mattress protector will protect your mattress from any wetness, ensuring that it remains to perfect condition.

“How can I prevent dust mites?”

Dust mites are an inevitability, however there are a number of preventable measures that you can take to help reduce the number of dust mites in your baby’s cot mattress, including:

- Organic wool naturally disperses moisture, creating an anti-dust mite environment

- A waterproof mattress protector helps prevent dust mites from entering into the mattress, along with any water or moisture

- Ensure that you clean your mattress regularly (hovering the mattress is recommended)

- Turn the cot mattress every 3 months

“Is The Little Green Sheep organic bedding machine washable?”

Yes. Nearly all of our organic bedding is machine washable and tumble dryer safe (baby blankets not tumble dryer safe). To ensure that all germs are killed in each wash, we recommend that you wash a 60°C. Please see the product care label for more details. Once purchased, we recommend that you always wash your new bedding prior to use.

2. Advice

Safe Sleep Advice

The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (FSIDS) recommends the following:

For the first six months, the safest place for you baby to sleep is in a cot in your bedroom

Place your baby on their back, rather than on their front or side

Place your baby feet first at the end of the cot, to stop them from wriggling too far under the blanket

Keep your baby’s room temperature at around 18 Degrees Celsius (64 Degrees Fahrenheit)

Bedding – use a sheet or blanket rather than a duvet

Regularly check that your baby isn’t getting too hot or cold by feeling their stomach

Avoid smoking during pregnancy and ensure that your baby is a smoke-free environment at all times

Bedtime Routines

Introducing a bedtime routine helps your baby learn when to go to sleep, with your baby starting to associate certain things with going to bed; such as cuddles, etc. It is recommended to establish a good consistent pattern first and only after that has been set, then being more flexible.
